Breaking the mesmerism of grief

Question 2: Share a testimony other than physical healing in which reading one or more of Skip’s articles had played an important part in your own spiritual study and prayer and final demonstration.

I had a wonderful healing of grief connected to reading one of Skip’s articles. For many years, I had been the constant companion and assistant of our beloved dog. When she passed on, I felt bereft and could not imagine not feeling sad when thinking or talking about her.

On JSH-Online, I read the pamphlet Overcoming Grief, which includes a reprint of Skip’s article “What death does not do” (Sentinel, February 13, 1989). These sentences in Skip’s article were particularly helpful: “We go on gaining moment by moment in the understanding that God is the only real Life. And this means recognizing that our whole purpose is to live love, not just receive it from other persons. There is a world waiting for our love.”

That article helped break the mesmerism of grief, and I was completely free of it by the Wednesday evening meeting that week—which I could not have believed possible. It is so freeing to think of our wonderful dog with love and not grief. This powerful healing proved divine Love’s power and presence. It made such an impression on me that I have shared that pamphlet and Skip’s article with others who have been working to overcome grief, so it continues to bless.
