A lesson in “childlike trust”
I’d like to share a physical healing that occurred this past summer while our son was at a camp for Christian Scientists where I was also working as a parent helper. The experience demonstrates for me “the serious practicality of Christian Science practice.” Even though it happened prior to reading the compilation of testimonies, the healing seemed so natural and was such a lesson in “childlike trust” that I wanted to include it with my assignment.
One morning our son arrived at breakfast with several large blistering marks on his neck. I asked him if he’d like to speak with the camp practitioner, but he was very clear that “all was well” and that he fully intended to carry on with that day’s planned activities. (I later learned that several other campers had encouraged him to go to the Christian Science nurse.)
I quickly realized that it was my thought that needed calming, so left him in the care of his loving counselors. I turned to that week’s lesson on Soul, searching for healing truths. The Golden Text instantly spoke to my fears: “… I am God, and there is none else” (Isaiah 45:22). Two passages from Science and Health also jumped off the page:
“We cannot deny that Life is self-sustained, and we should never deny the everlasting harmony of Soul, simply because, to the mortal senses, there is seeming discord. It is our ignorance of God, the divine Principle, which produces apparent discord, and the right understanding of Him restores harmony. Truth will at length compel us all to exchange the pleasures and pains of sense for the joys of Soul” (S&H 390:4).
“Who that has felt the loss of human peace has not gained stronger desires for spiritual joy? The aspiration after heavenly good comes even before we discover what belongs to wisdom and Love. The loss of earthly hopes and pleasures brightens the ascending path of many a heart. The pains of sense quickly inform us that the pleasures of sense are mortal and that joy is spiritual” (S&H 265:23).
I am so grateful for our weekly Bible Lessons! How perfectly divine Love meets our human needs, moment by moment!
I was soon able to proceed with my planned activities, secure in God’s care for all His beloved children. When I met my son that evening, he happily announced he was healed. Sure enough, the marks that had seemed so unsightly had faded, and within a short time there was no further trace.
He later told me what had come to him when he was lying in bed and all his friends were playing: “Why let error, a lie, stop me from having fun?” With that, he got up and joined them.
The icing on the cake occurred at a camp-wide testimony meeting several days later, when an older camper in our son’s cabin expressed his gratitude for witnessing our son’s healing.
