“A so-called accident that never happened”

As I was coming down the steps from a restaurant, I caught my heel, lost my balance entirely and felt as though I was catapulted across the sidewalk to the other side. I thought that my ankle had been turned but the extreme pain in my foot was making it difficult to even stand, and it appeared there was a fracture or some sort of bone injury.

My wife and a friend came to my aid and helped me get to the car. I knew that as practicing Christian Scientists they were praying in a way that could help me practically and immediately. I counted on it to help in fact, but felt that meanwhile I was preoccupied with what felt like my own very real pain. Yet by the end of the short ride home, the most severe pain was gone.

My wife mentioned that of course she was praying to understand there were no accidents in divine Mind but she was also seeing something more about this—that it was less about a clumsy mistake on my part and more a form of attack to deny the many healings we’d both been witnessing. She said she saw that mortal mind could not possibly reach or touch Mind’s spiritual expressing; She also saw there was nothing dislocated or out of joint in God’s creation. This helped me to wake up to the fact that I had in effect been actively cooperating with the problem by starting from the pain and the problem and then trying to think something to stop it. The so-called accident never happened but was an error of the limited corporeal senses.

Even though there was much swelling and blackening of the top of the foot, we both stayed with the more compelling spiritual fact that in God’s creation, which is actually here and now in its infinite rightness and goodness, there was no fall and therefore no results from it. The discoloration withdrew. Within two days I was able to stand on the foot without further pain. Within another two days, I was able to wear a shoe and go up and down stairs without any unusual sensation. I’m grateful for this healing because instead of being “one more” problem to be worked out, it served as one more proof of how Christ, Truth, makes evident the unbroken goodness of God’s actual creation.
